Shopify Collection Descriptions: The SEO Opportunity Most Stores Miss

SEO | 7 min read

Why Collection Pages Matter for SEO

Most Shopify store owners focus their SEO efforts on product pages and blog posts. Collection pages get overlooked, which is a mistake because they are often the best pages on your site for ranking on broader, higher-volume search terms.

A product page targets a specific item: "men's navy wool blazer." A collection page targets the category: "men's blazers." Category terms tend to have significantly more search volume than individual product terms, which means collection pages can drive more total traffic than any single product page.

Without a description, your collection page is just a grid of product thumbnails. Google sees very little unique text content, which makes it hard to rank for anything meaningful.

What to Write in a Collection Description

A strong collection description does not need to be long. It needs to be intentional. Here is what to include:

  • An opening sentence targeting your primary keyword. "Shop our collection of handcrafted ceramic mugs, made in small batches from stoneware clay." This tells Google exactly what the page is about.
  • What the collection includes. Briefly describe the range: styles, materials, price points, or use cases. This helps both search engines and customers understand the scope.
  • Buying guidance. Help the customer narrow their choice. "Looking for everyday basics? Start with our Classic line. Want something for a special occasion? Browse the Heritage collection."
  • A brand or quality signal. One sentence about what makes your products in this category worth buying. "Every piece is hand-thrown and kiln-fired in our Portland studio."

Ideal Length for Collection Descriptions

Aim for 100 to 300 words. This is enough to include your target keywords, provide context for the customer, and give Google meaningful content to index. Anything shorter risks being too thin. Anything much longer can push the product grid too far down the page.

Many Shopify themes support placing the description above and below the product grid. If yours does, consider a short introduction above the grid (one to two sentences) and a longer, more detailed section below it. This gives Google the content it needs without disrupting the shopping experience.

Keyword Targeting for Collection Pages

Each collection page should target a primary keyword and a small cluster of related terms. For example:

Collection: Men's Blazers

  • Primary keyword: men's blazers
  • Related: men's sport coats, casual blazers for men, men's wool blazers, blazers for work

Weave these terms naturally into your collection description. Do not stuff them. One or two mentions of the primary keyword and a natural inclusion of one to two related terms is plenty for a 200-word description.

Examples: Weak vs. Strong Collection Descriptions

Weak:

"Check out our candles."

Strong:

"Hand-poured soy candles made with natural fragrance oils and cotton wicks. Each candle burns for 40 to 60 hours and comes in a reusable amber glass jar. Choose from seasonal scents like Cedar + Tobacco and Lemon Verbena, or explore our unscented line for fragrance-sensitive spaces. All candles are made in small batches in Austin, Texas."

The weak version gives Google nothing to work with and tells the customer nothing they did not already know. The strong version targets relevant keywords, communicates quality, and helps the customer navigate the collection.
